Uptown, Pittsburgh
Living in Uptown
Uptown — also branded the EcoInnovation District — is a compact neighborhood wedged between Downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland, along the Fifth and Forbes avenue corridors. Long overlooked, it's now one of the city's most actively redeveloping areas, anchored by Duquesne University, UPMC Mercy and PPG Paints Arena, with a city-adopted plan guiding new housing, transit and green space.
Schools & Education
Uptown is part of Pittsburgh Public Schools, and its central location puts it minutes from Downtown and the universities of Oakland. Buyers with school-age children should confirm the current feeder schools for the specific address.
Healthcare & Shopping
UPMC Mercy — which completed a $510M expansion in 2023 — is right in the neighborhood, and Downtown's shopping, groceries and services are a short walk or ride away. A new Bus Rapid Transit line further links Uptown to Downtown and Oakland.
Dining, Parks & Attractions
PPG Paints Arena (Penguins hockey and concerts) sits at the edge of Uptown, with Downtown's cultural district, stadiums and riverfront parks all close by. Duquesne University's campus adds green space and energy.
Investment Outlook
Uptown has drawn more than $880M in investment in recent years — an unusual concentration for a small Pittsburgh neighborhood — which makes it one to watch. That said, redevelopment is uneven and parcel-by-parcel, and values, zoning and building condition vary widely. Careful research and a knowledgeable agent are essential to separate genuine opportunity from risk here.
